Our daughter Cecily was diagnosed with Pitt Hopkins Syndrome when she was about 18 months old. It was, admittedly, a very difficult time, as my husband and I slowly adjusted our expectations for her future. We grieved what was lost, but we have since learned to celebrate all that is gained. Cece is one of the brightest lights in our lives, and we are honored to live in the warmth of her light.
Our family has raised nearly $20,000 for the Pitt Hopkins Research Foundation since learning of Cecily’s diagnosis. Our most successful fundraiser was called Pizza for Pitt Hopkins. Owners of a local pizzeria generously offered to host a fundraiser in celebration of Cece and donate 20% of all sales to the foundation. We also asked area businesses to donate raffle prizes to boost our fundraising. The whole event was easy, fun, and uplifting.

Here is a five-step approach you can try for a similar event:
1.) Find a restaurant or business to host your event
Start with any personal connections you may have – perhaps your family frequents a favorite spot, or perhaps you know someone who owns a café or manages a bar. Some chain restaurants or entertainment venues also regularly host fundraising events. Expect venues to donate 10-25% of sales. Restaurants may be more likely to host events during their off-season or lightest day of the week. If you cannot secure a business to host your event, consider asking a fire department to host a pancake breakfast or spaghetti dinner.
2.) Solicit raffle prizes
Start a month or so prior to your event. Print information about the Pitt Hopkins Research Foundation and the upcoming event, and carry copies everywhere you normally go. Checking into your gym? Ask if they’ll donate a one-month membership. Buying a birthday gift at a toy store? Ask if they’ll donate some merchandise. Meeting a friend out for coffee? Ask if they’ll donate a gift card. Always ask for a manager or owner, as most employees don’t have the authority to make donations. Be kind, confident, and cheerful. Remember – 100% of raffle ticket sales will go to your cause, so be motivated to procure as many donations as you can!
3.) Publicize your event
Create an event page on social media. Be clear about details like timing and whether or not reservations are needed. Announce your event about a month in advance, then blast reminders a week or so ahead of time. Tease the raffle prizes with photos. Be sure to share the event details with every circle or community you’re a part of – friends, family, colleagues, schools, alumni networks, and more. Mail hard copy invitations to relatives and neighbors that don’t use social media. Consider explaining how to make a donation for those who cannot attend but want to contribute.
4.) Party prep
The upfront costs are minimal: buy a roll of raffle tickets and a small cashbox with a lock. Consider some pale blue decorations and details – a dozen balloons or handmade awareness ribbons. Wrap the raffle prizes in clear cellophane and blue ribbons, and put a small jar or paper bag in front of each one to hold raffle tickets. Arrive early to set up the raffle display.
5.) Thank all your supporters
Greet everyone who shows up for the event with enthusiasm and gratitude. Thank everyone who buys raffle tickets. Write glowing reviews on your venue’s Yelp page. Send handwritten notes to all the businesses who made a donation. You will be more likely to receive more donations in the future if your benefactors feel appreciated.
Good luck!

Our family has fundraised for the Pitt Hopkins Research Foundation for the past 6 years, in honor of Ashton and all of his Pitt Hopkins brothers and sisters. We began our Texas Trekkers Walk 6 years ago. What started as a small event has grown even bigger now and we have now held 2 – 5K races along with our walk!
This has been a wonderful event each year and we have loved seeing our Texas Pitt Hopkins families come together for our big cause. We have been able to reach out to our communities and gain so much support. We utilize the connections that we each have and get many items for the event donated. This truly has helped us bring in so many more donations. There are many individuals as well as companies that are willing to help sponsor events such as ours. Do not be afraid to ask…reach out to friends and family members. We have learned after 6 years that there are so many people willing to help, they just need to be asked! We have a letter and event packet that we have readily available to email or personally deliver to individuals as well as potential sponsors for the event. It has been found over the years that we have held our event, the more you can personalize the letter the better response you have.
We set up the day to have the walk/5K at the beginning of the day. Donuts and bagels as well as coffee, water and Gatorade are all donated and available for breakfast. We sell raffle tickets for baskets and items that are donated. Raffle baskets bring in a big amount for us each year. Our baskets are all from friends, families, and the community. We reach out for donations every year that can be utilized to create theme baskets. We never turn down a donation because we know that it can be used somehow! Over the years we have learned where to look for donations, who to ask, as well as how to put baskets together to draw interest and gain more money from raffle ticket sales.
We also sell tickets for our cake/cookie walk which has become a huge crowd favorite, again, everything is donated from friends, families, and the community. We have a face painter and photo booth available for all the event guests, as well as a bounce house for even more fun!
At the end of each event we look back at the work we put in and always smile. There are days that you get told no when working on donations or sponsorship requests. When the event finally arrives and you see all the friends, families and the community come together for one huge purpose it pays off. The smiles you see all day and the total that comes in makes it all worthwhile. We will never give up…we continue to fight for the big cause…and this is one way that we have been able to do that!

Our family has fundraised for the PHRF in honor of our son, Victor, with Direct Mail Fundraising Cards for the past 5 years. It has been my favorite type of fundraising we have done. We have been able to reach a broad audience of friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers who are connected with our family, and who enjoy getting updates about our son and the progress the foundation is making.
Each year my parents and I gather our favorite photos of Victor throughout the past 12 months, and choose a template from Shutterfly to make two different personalized cards, one for my parents to send out, and one for our family to mail out. Inside the card, we include a heart-felt letter about Victor, including both the struggles and the accomplishments of the year. We also write about the research the Foundation has accomplished recently, and the goals we have for the near future. We include a personalized sticky note to the potential donor on the inside of each card. Both my parents and I send out about 100 cards to our friends and family, including a self-addressed stamped envelope for donors to send a check to the foundation. I write a personalized thank you note to every donor. A Charitable Gift Receipt is provided by the foundation to all donors (all donations are tax-deductible). The PHRF will be able to provide the information needed for the research updates and goals for this letter.
I have had so many friends and family send back notes or share with me when we see them in town, thanking us for including them in our Fundraising Card campaign every year. It is truly heartwarming to receive this type of support and love from our friends. We have found that people want to be able to help in some way, but they don’t know how – and our fundraising cards give them a way to lift you up and let you know they really care.
